Edward Dolan Hale Family Photograph, 1904

Early in the 20th Century, probably in the summer of 1904, the Edward Dolan Hale family came together in a photographer’s studio in Laconia, New Hampshire. Mr. Hale was father, grandfather, and father-in-law to people who would go forward in the new century to build machinery for railroads and hosiery-knitting factories, to play music for dances, weddings, and parades, and to start families of their own.

Standing, from left to right, Maude Hale, Leon Paxton Hale, Nellie Hale. Front row, Henry Hale, Annie Hale, Irene Smith, Sadie Smith, Edward Dolan Hale, Eva Carrie Hale, Edward Hazen Hale, Cora Levina (Hyde) Hale.

We thank Norma C. Forster-Schwinghammer, Edward Hazen Hale’s granddaughter, for providing a copy negative of the original photograph. We consider this the most important Hale family photograph to come down to us, and perhaps hers is the only original image from this sitting. Her grandfather wrote down the names for her, and we have copied them exactly.
